Debt Collections Outsourcing

Nearly every major company that deals with consumers also deals with credit. As a creditor, it is in their best interest to ensure that all money loaned is paid back. There are incentives to consumer to make timely payments, and if they do not, there are late fees.

Normally when late fees start accruing, the debtor jumps back into paying off the debt in order to avoid further fees or other problems. However, this is not always the case. Sometimes over time it becomes apparent that the debtor has no intention of paying off the debt, or is otherwise unresponsive. In these situations, the company will send the debt to the collections department of the company.

If that department is still unable to get the debtor to pay, or if the company does not have it's own collection department, debt collections outsourcing comes into play. This is when the debt is handed over to a third party who will then take over the account.

Debt collections outsourcing is most often done by sending the debt to a collection agency. The agency is then responsible for collecting payment of the debt. The collection agency usually charges no up front fee, but only charges a percentage of what is actually collected as their fee. Sometimes the agency purchases the debt from the company at a rate below the actual debt value. Then the account belongs to them and they keep anything that is made over the amount they bought the debt for.

Debt collections outsourcing is often the best solution for a company. It can save them the time and money that is required to keep pushing for payment of a debt that may not ever be paid back anyway. There is no assurance that the debtor will respond, so it can be a real waste of time to continue hounding someone who will not pay. Selling or outsourcing the debt, while giving them some loss, will at least give them a part of the balance, and free them from the burden of trying to get the full balance.

A collection agency may have more tools to help them get the funds from the debtor, and can therefore be more effective. They can threaten legal action against a debtor, where the creditor may not want to get involved so deeply in the account.

With debt collections outsourcing, a company can be sure that they will get some amount of payment. This is often worth the possible loss of the debt that might be repaid, as the company has no guarantee at all that the debtor will pay, whereas the agency will absolutely pay a certain amount for the debt. This can save a lot of time and hassle and is therefore worth the loss.
